The highlight of the evening is a semi-staged performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s uproarious operetta set back in the bad old days when dumping someone could result in a court appearance. Before it Rebecca Taylor is the soloist in a delightful Haydn keyboard concerto.

Handel’s Messiah is one of the greatest choral works ever written. It tells the story of Jesus Christ using familiar texts assembled from the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer. Handel’s response to these words is truly sublime. Christmas just isn’t Christmas without it.

Here is a rare chance to hear Mendelssohn’s huge oratorio Elijah, written for the Birmingham Festival in 1846. It tells of the life of the Prophet as depicted in Bible. It was hugely popular from its first performance but fell from favour in the last century.

Ripon Cathedral
Tonight’s concert closes with Bach’s Magnificat, one of the most glorious works ever composed. Before it comes some popular choral works including Zadok the Priest. There is also the first performance of a new work by LFC’s Choral Composer Scholar, Paul Dunkerley.
